Twenty & Whales

I turn 20 in 2 weeks and here I am trying to think up what to do for my birthday. My parents wanna throw a party, even if it's just a little dinner thing with some of my girlfriends. But since I'm gonna hit the big two-oh, I want to make it memorable by doing things I like.

Whale watching is one of those things.

I love whales -- always have and always will. We went to the city today for Father's Day and my mum picked up a brochure of "What's On In Sydney". I had a look-through earlier to see what info it had on whale watching cruises in the Harbour. I found 4 different cruises; only 2, I liked.

I'm done browsing, and all I have to do now is decide whether I wanna book a 30-seat cruise for me and 29 friends, or just book a handful of spots for a handful of friends and myself. I'm not sure I want to go to my friends and say, "Hey, I want you to come whale watching with me for my birthday, but you gotta pay your own fare of $75." I mean, it's understandable, but $75 is a lot of money.

Anyway, why the photo of the beached [Humpback] whale?

I was trying to explain what a Humpback whale looked like to my sister even though I have 2 posters of them on my bedroom walls, so I Googled "humpback whale" and the above photo was the first result.

It makes me sad. I want to go whale watching to see the LIVE Humpbacks frolicking in the water and breaching (leaping out of the water) to amuse the humans, and the first photo that Google gives me is of a dead whale on a beach, lying on it's back (it wouldn't even be able to breathe), with a girl dressed up as a ranger of some sort posing in front of it. How horrid.
